Three standards dominate carton drop testing, and they disagree on the details that matter most: drop height, the number of drops, and which faces are hit. Using the wrong one produces a report that looks complete but does not answer the buyer's question.
ISTA 3A
A distribution-oriented procedure for parcel delivery. Drop height is derived from package weight, and the sequence includes drops on edges and corners, not just faces. If the customer ships e-commerce parcels, this is usually the right choice.
ASTM D5276
A free-fall test method rather than a full procedure. It defines how to perform a drop and how to report it, leaving the number of drops and the conditioning to the specification that invokes it. Note that it specifies a release mechanism that does not impart rotation or vertical force to the package.
GB/T 4857.5
The Chinese national method for vertical impact drop testing of transport packages. Drop height follows a table based on mass, and the standard expects the package to land on a rigid, horizontal impact surface. It is the reference most often named in domestic procurement documents.
Practical note
Whatever the standard, the drop surface is part of the test. A machine standing on a sprung floor will not produce compliant results, and the impact plate must be thick and rigid enough not to flex. If in doubt, ask for the plate mass and thickness in the quotation.
